Student Ministries

Southlake [Church] is still absolutely committed to sharing the Good News. They still desire to see those kids—and their families—find hope and peace and joy and love through Jesus Christ. It’s nothing they are going to push inappropriately during school hours, but it’s also not something they are going to hide. They are committed to honoring the boundaries set by the public schools. And they should. They are also committed to remaining a steady presence in the community. —Kevin Palau, Unlikely

How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? — Romans 10:14

This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples—when they see the love you have for each other. — John 13:35

As Christians, we understand that holistic transformation involves more than just the physical. But will people believe that Jesus is loving and just if we as His followers aren’t loving and just? Will our kids believe in this Jesus if they’re coming to class hungry each day and we don’t feed them? If they’re worried about where they’ll be sleeping each night and we don’t help?

Imagine what a different view of Jesus our kids, teachers, and school administrators would have if churches first offered to serve the felt needs and goals of the school and the families represented? Then if there’s mutual interest from the church and school, start a Bible study or program following the guidelines set aside by the school, or partner with one of the following organizations while continuing to serve as requested by the school. No matter what your partnership looks like, members can be encouraged to pray for the school and to be ready to share the faith basis behind their service if asked (I Peter 3:15). Just be sure to keep the lines of communication open with school staff and administrators, and emphasize with all volunteers the importance of abiding by school and district guidelines.

What about the separation of church of state? Cynthia McCabe explains more in this informative article.
