Houston is one of the most economically vibrant cities in the world today. Despite the cyclical nature of the energy industry, Houston remains one of the best places to live and work. We love Houston! 

Unfortunately, income inequality is still an issue. Consider these simple facts:

• 1 in 4 Houstonians (1 in 3 children) live in poverty.
• 1 in 5 Houston households (1 in 4 households with children) are food insecure and must turn to others for help to feed their families.
• A low-income child in Houston has only a 9% chance of graduating from college; in some area high schools, 50% of students drop out.

This doesn’t bode well for Houston’s future. With so many government agencies and nonprofit organizations in Houston, it’s easy to think that others will attend to these needs — that “anyone but me” can take care of the hunger, poverty, joblessness, and illiteracy that exist in every neighborhood. Yet these needs persist. With thousands of Houstonians living in poverty and struggling to meet basic needs, the Church in Houston must step up.

Responding to this combination of need and opportunity in Houston, we launched Loving Houston in June 2013 as a faith-based community revitalization initiative.

Our goal is simple and unique: to create a long-term compassion and city transformation movement in America’s fourth largest city. Houston is the perfect place for such a movement to take root and grow. This is because Houston:

• Has a strong religious base of individuals whose faith is a central part of their daily lives;
• Is home to hundreds of thousands of families with diverse and deep human needs; and
• Is one of the most generous cities in the nation, with citizens who devote significant financial resources and volunteer time to help their neighbors.

There has never been a better time to draw Christians together in Houston to live out the Great Commandment and the Great Commission.
