This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples—when they see the love you have for each other. — John 13:35
How can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? — Romans 10:14
Southlake [Church] is still absolutely committed to sharing the Good News. They still desire to see those kids—and their families—find hope and peace and joy and love through Jesus Christ. It’s nothing they are going to push inappropriately during school hours, but it’s also not something they are going to hide. They are committed to honoring the boundaries set by the public schools. And they should. They are also committed to remaining a steady presence in the community. —Kevin Palau, Unlikely
Houston-area public schools are asking churches to love their students and teachers. At the same time, we as believers are called to love our neighbors and to be salt and light in our communities. What an opportunity we have to fulfill the Great Commission and the Great Commandment in our schools!
Start by asking your local school about their goals and dreams for their campus. Then brainstorm how your church come alongside the school to help them achieve their goals. Model Jesus’ humility and unconditional love as you serve with no agenda. If there is mutual interest from the church and school, include a Gospel component to your partnership (see below for helpful resources). Also, members can always be encouraged to pray for the school and to be ready to share the faith basis behind their service if asked (I Peter 3:15).
